WORD WORK AT LITERACY STATIONS

One of the most rewarding experiences for elementary educators is watching young learners develop into confident readers. There is that "Aha!" moment when a beginner reader masters word-sound connection and reads with accuracy and fluency.

A way to encourage this development is through a variety of sensory activities at literacy stations. In pairs, the first grade class explored word work for "short u" words through the following activities:

1. Writing in a salt tray

2. Listening to and repeating tongue twisters

3. Spelling with magnetic letters

4. Word-picture matching game

5. Use decodable readers to read to self, then read to teacher

Each pair cooperated well and worked self-sufficiently to practice with the five activities.
